Resisting Dictatorship in a Fun and Joyful Way

We gather to seek clarity through historical perspective, which will enable practice of right thinking and speech about our current political condition. Learn the origins of liberal and republican positions: that they have different views towards liberty and freedom and towards the fundamental institutions for democratic, self-government.

The republican view – freedom from domination – is a form of government going back to the Romans. It was eclipsed by the liberal view – freedom from interference – starting around 1800 in England with the industrialists and financiers who fancied “free market” “laissez faire” (including NO TARIFFS) capitalism.

So, in the USA, at this moment we are completely reversed. Today with Trump and the techno-oligarchs in charge, liberal authoritarianism is dominant. True republicans are the opposition and the true patriots and defenders of this country’s original constitution.

Of course, it is even worse than this: with Trump we have reverted to archaic dictatorship: rule by men, not rule by law.

Come together to discuss these issues.

We will be following closely two current authors about American political history: Heather Cox Richardson and Michael Sandel. Their two books that will guide our discussions are, respectively: How the South Won the Civil War and Democracy’s Discontent.

Our facilitator, Torrey Byles, an economist and author, will give talks at the beginning of each discussion session, and will bring in other authors as well.

Hands Off Our Courts! Human-Shield Protest & Rally

On this National Day of Mass Mobilization, SLO County opponents of American authoritarianism will rally at the SLO County Courthouse. The courts are our last defense against the MuskTrump assault on our fundamental constitutional freedoms. The judicial system is now the focus of their latest attacks. The MuskTrump regime is defying federal court orders, undermining the authority of the judiciary, even calling for warrantless invasions of our homes! Flouting court decisions collapses the rule of law -- a danger to us all. Join up to form a human protective shield around our SLO County Courthouse to raise our voices against the corruption, cruelty and lawlessness of the MuskTrump regime. Don't just be angry -- act now! Tell Them Hands Off! Sign up here to help with this event.
