A Quiet Protest

Milo Yiannopoulos, alt-right speaker and provocateur, is speaking at Cal Poly on January 31 as a guest of the Cal Poly Republican Club. Mr. Yiannopoulos is at the end of his “Dangerous Faggot” tour that has riled up college campuses across the nation, and in at least one instance, resulted in a protester being shot this past weekend at the University of Washington. Despite his reputation for inciting racism and violence, the Cal Poly administration has declined to intervene, citing the free speech rights of students and their chosen guests.

Since Mr. Yiannopoulos delights in inciting protests and demonstrations, People of Faith for Justice encourages San Luis Obispo activists and those who would protest at Spanos Theatre to stay away from his presentation, and instead, to use the time to reach out to a neighbor or someone you don’t know well, inviting them to tea or dinner or just to have a friendly conversation.

Let’s practice our own right to free speech
in quiet protest as we build bridges, not walls.
