The South County Democratic Club of San Luis Obispo County — which embraces Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, and Pismo Beach, as well as the communities of Nipomo and Oceano — contacted the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors on June 14, 2020, to urge that, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, they, “… work together as colleagues to notify the California Department of Parks and Recreation that reopening the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (ODSVRA) too soon would be a serious mistake.”

The South County Democratic Club advised caution, saying that, “… we cannot afford errors that would undermine the process of reopening our businesses, revitalizing our local economy and safeguarding our residents’ well-being.” Citing and agreeing with SLO County Health Officer Dr. Penny Borenstein’s May 15 opinion that, “Leisure travel should not take place during a pandemic,” the South County Democratic Club emphasized in its letter to the Board of Supervisors that, “‘Leisure travel’ means tourism, driving for hours to go to a beach. It’s that clear.”
